Carney Courts Global Investors in Toronto
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is hosting an investment summit in Toronto, bringing together dozens of global investors to discuss potential investments in Canada's economy. The two-day event, which began on Monday, aims to match Canadian companies and projects with international investors, with a focus on attracting C$1 trillion ($721 billion) in investments over the next five years.
The summit features confirmed attendees from top investment firms, including BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and Blackstone President Jon Gray. Carney has pledged to cut red tape and develop key sectors such as mining, energy, technology, and infrastructure to attract investors. He notes that Canada is a stable and predictable market poised for long-term economic growth.
The investment summit is seen as critical in helping Canada's economy weather the trade war with the United States, its top trading partner. Carney has also sought to strengthen ties with new partners in the Middle East and Asia, and mend relationships with India and China. The government estimates that foreign direct investment flows have been steadily rising since 2022, with a quarterly average of C$23 billion in 2024 and 2025.
BMO Capital Markets chief economist Doug Porter warns that luring greenfield investments to Canada will be challenging due to its mature economy. However, the government is optimistic about the potential for the investment summit to supercharge foreign direct investment.
