Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney defended his government's approach to trade negotiations with the US, saying Canada remains in a 'strong position' as Ottawa works toward a more stable trading relationship with Washington.

Speaking during a news conference in Alberta, Carney pointed out that over 80% of Canada's trade with the US is tariff-free and emphasized the importance of maintaining this arrangement. He noted that the $6.5 billion cost of the Gordie Howe Bridge represents less than 5% of the economic activity it supports.

Carney stated that Canada is seeking a more permanent or stable trading relationship with the US, one that addresses issues in its largest industries and recognizes the new US approach to trade. He emphasized that Ottawa is entering negotiations from a position of strength, citing job growth, foreign investment, and efforts to diversify its trade relationships.

When asked about additional US tariffs taking effect in August, Carney said that officials are currently in talks in Washington, but Canada will only accept a solution that works for Canadians. He noted that Ottawa has 'lots of options' if a deal is not reached, including supporting the economy and addressing other issues.
