Carney Fires Back at Trump Over Escalating Trade Tensions

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney fired back at US President Donald Trump over escalating trade tensions between their countries. In response to Washington's aggressive posturing, Carney urged Trump's administration to 'stop trying to be tough' and focus on serious trade negotiations.

'When the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade and stop trying to be tough, and start being serious about having those discussions, we can have those discussions,' Carney said. He accused Washington of pursuing terms that would leave Canadian industries as subsidiaries of American companies or 'gradually wound down in Canada and wiped out.'

Carney's comments came after a new wave of attacks from the US, including Trump's move to rename Lake Ontario 'Lake America' and social media posts taunting Canada. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Canada could not match the size of the US economy, which is 13 times larger.

Carney maintained that Washington sought an 'uncompetitive' deal for key industries like autos, while pushing changes affecting French-language and cultural protections. He stated any of these issues would block an agreement.
