Carney Fires Back at Trump Over Trade Dispute and Social Media Jabs

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney shot back at the Trump administration over its latest wave of attacks, including renaming Lake Ontario 'Lake America' and mocking Canadian military cadets on social media.

Carney called for Washington to drop its 'meme-like' behavior and become serious about trade negotiations. He said the U.S.-Canada talks could resume if the Americans were willing to discuss terms that would not harm Canadian industries.

The prime minister accused the Trump administration of pursuing an 'uncompetitive' deal, which would have left key industries such as autos subject to American control or led to their gradual decline in Canada. He also rejected U.S. demands for limits on future trade deals and changes to French-language and cultural protections.

Carney's comments came after a series of public jabs from the Trump administration, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's statement that Canada could not match the size of the U.S. economy. The Pentagon stood by its earlier tweet mocking Canadian military cadets, saying it spoke for itself.
