Carney Fires Back at Trump Over Trade Tensions

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has fired back at US President Trump in their escalating trade dispute. Speaking out against Washington's aggressive tactics, Carney urged the administration to 'stop doing memes' and 'stop throwing shade,' instead becoming serious about negotiating a new trade deal.

The two countries have been locked in a stalemate since August 21, when talks collapsed over issues including tariffs, autos, and cultural protections. Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, prompting Canada to retaliate with plans for its own tariffs.

Carney accused the US of seeking an 'uncompetitive' deal that would effectively turn Canadian industries into subsidiaries of American companies or drive them out of business altogether. He also took issue with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's claim that Canada couldn't 'go tit for tat' due to its smaller economy.

However, Carney was buoyed by Monday's Liberal sweep in three special elections, including a decisive win in Quebec, which reinforced his position and gave him leverage as he confronts Trump over trade and Canadian sovereignty.
