UK and Canadian leaders are set to meet in Liverpool on September 15 for their first in-person summit. The meeting will be part of a three-day trip to Europe by Mark Carney, Canada's prime minister, who has strong ties to the city.

Carney, a former governor of the Bank of England and self-confessed Everton fan, will be welcomed to his native city by Andy Burnham. The pair have previously worked together on issues related to the football club, with Carney providing backing for its appeal against point deductions.

The summit will focus on key areas of cooperation between the two nations, including defence and security, energy, and artificial intelligence. According to Carney, 'Canada and our European partners are moving ever closer' due to shared values and common interests.
