Carney Rejects Lutnick's Claim on Canada Trade Talks Collapse
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has pushed back against claims that Canada derailed trade talks with the United States for political reasons. Speaking in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Carney dismissed comments from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, saying Ottawa will continue to defend its interests.
Carney said Canada remains prepared to negotiate a deal that benefits both countries, stating 'The deal that's possible, that's in the interests of Canadian workers, families and businesses, is also the deal that is in the interests of American families, American businesses, American consumers.'
President Donald Trump responded to Carney's remarks with a post on Truth Social, warning Canada could face serious economic consequences. Trump claimed that if Canada's economy collapses, it would be 'very bad for Politics, Worse than anything that has ever happened to a Canadian Politician.'
