Carney Sees Trade War Opportunity for Canada's Economic Resilience
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says his country will emerge from its trade war with the United States as a more resilient and independent economy. Speaking at the Canada Investment Summit in Toronto, he emphasized that future cooperation between Canada and Washington must be based on mutual respect for each country's sovereignty.
Carney said Canada will come out of the trade conflict stronger and more prepared to engage as a 'true partner' with its southern neighbor. He also announced plans to seek private investment through long-term concessions to operate Canada's four largest airports, which could raise tens of billions of dollars for infrastructure projects.
The Prime Minister criticized what he described as an increasingly transactional approach to international economic relationships, where countries prioritize short-term gains over long-term partnerships. This is a reference to the trade policies of U.S. President Donald Trump, who has used tariffs to pressure trading partners and press manufacturers to relocate south of the Canadian border.
