Carney Stands Firm Against Trump's Tariffs and Trade Policies
Mark Carney, Canada's Prime Minister and former Governor of the Bank of England, has taken a strong stance against U.S. President Donald Trump's policies. In his book 'Value(s): Building a Better World for All', published in 2021, Carney argued that the global financial crisis was caused by three lies of finance: 'this time is different,' 'the market is always right,' and 'markets are moral.'
Carney believes policymakers must resist these seductive beliefs and recognize the limits of the market. He also noted that trust in government policy can be fleeting, citing Korea's experience with single-stock leveraged exchange-traded funds as an example.
The recent tariff war between Canada and the U.S. has given Carney a platform to advocate for his views. Ottawa has imposed retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products, targeting exports from politically competitive states ahead of the midterm elections.
