Carney Tells Trump: Stop 'Memes' and Engage in Serious Trade Talks

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney shot back at the Trump administration on Tuesday, urging them to 'stop doing memes' and engage in serious trade talks. The comments came amidst a fresh wave of attacks from Washington since US-Canada trade talks collapsed on August 21.

Carney said that if the US became serious about negotiations, Canada would be willing to resume talks. However, he accused the US of pursuing terms that could leave Canadian industries 'gradually wound down in Canada and wiped out.'

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned Canada that it could not 'go tit for tat' with an economy 13 times larger, while Trump has moved to rename Lake Ontario 'Lake America' and taunted Canada on social media.

Carney responded by saying that the US was seeking limits on Canada's future trade deals. 'We're not going to, of course, we're not going to accept those terms,' he said.
