Carney Vows Retaliation as Trade Talks with US Collapse
Prime Minister Mark Carney held a news conference on August 22, 2026, after failed trade talks with the United States. The negotiations had been ongoing for some time, but ultimately ended in failure when Canada refused to accept the terms proposed by the US.
In his press conference, Carney emphasized that Canada cannot control external events, but can control its own trading relationships. He stated that they worked 'intensively' and in good faith to reach an agreement that protects workers and families while strengthening the Canadian economy and sovereignty.
Carney also highlighted the importance of Canada's energy relationship with the US, pointing out that 99% of American natural gas imports, 85% of electricity imports, and 60% of crude oil imports come from Canada. He expressed his skepticism that the US would want to stop receiving this energy.
The Canadian government has announced that it will retaliate against the new tariffs with equal measures of its own. The retaliatory tariffs will be concentrated in sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. These tariffs are set to take effect on the Tuesday after Labour Day.
