Carney Vows Stronger, More Independent Canada Amid Ongoing Trade Tensions
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed hundreds of global investors at the Canada Investment Summit in Toronto, saying that Canada will emerge from its trade war with the United States as a more resilient and independent economy.
Speaking at the summit on September 15, 2026, Carney stated that any future cooperation between Canada and the US must be built on respect for each country's sovereignty. He emphasized that when opportunities return, Canada will be an even better partner - stronger, more resilient, and more independent.
The Canadian Prime Minister also announced a plan to seek private investment through long-term concessions to run Canada's four biggest airports. This move is expected to raise tens of billions of dollars, which would be reinvested in transport and other infrastructure. Carney criticized the transactional and zero-sum approach to international economic ties, saying that 'our reputation - as a reliable, predictable partner - has rarely been more valuable'.
Despite ongoing trade tensions, Carney noted that about 80 per cent of trade with the US remains tariff-free, suggesting that there is still potential for mutually beneficial arrangements. He emphasized that Canada will remain open to working with the US, but only as an equal partner.
