Carney Vows to Defend Canadians Against Latest US Trade Measures
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to defend his country's workers and businesses from the latest US trade measures. The US administration announced on Monday its intention to impose additional tariffs on certain Canadian goods, including wine, hockey sticks, and cement.
The tariffs will apply in 27 days, but Carney emphasized that Canada is 'in a stronger position than we were when this trade war started 18 months ago' due to the determination of Canadians themselves.
He credited public solidarity for the shift, saying Canadians 'from coast to coast, have shown solidarity and taken the necessary steps to support our economy and defend our workers, farmers, businesses and families.'
Carney pointed out that Canada already enjoys preferential access to 1.5 billion consumers through 16 free trade agreements with 51 countries, accounting for about two-thirds of global GDP.
