Carney's $1 Trillion Investment Drive Aims to Boost Canada's Economy
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney is hosting the country's first-ever national investment summit in Toronto on September 14 and 15, aiming to attract $1 trillion in investments over five years. The summit will bring together hundreds of global and domestic investors with trillions of dollars in assets under management.
The Canadian government has identified a lack of business investment as one of its biggest challenges, which has contributed to weak productivity and sluggish growth. Carney's goal is to funnel spending to critical infrastructure and other major projects, and he has already taken steps to streamline approvals for nation-building projects.
However, critics point out that regulatory burdens and long timelines and uncertainty facing project approvals in Canada have been a significant barrier to investment. The Conservative party also blames Liberal policies, such as the industrial carbon price, for holding back the resource extraction and manufacturing sectors.
The summit will feature a list of major projects across the country, including ports, pipelines, and critical mineral extraction. New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt plans to pitch multiple projects, including a port expansion and a data centre in Lorneville. The event is being co-organized by the Prime Minister's Office with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Public Sector Pension Investments.
