Carney's Billion-Dollar Bet: Canada Investment Summit Seeks $1 Trillion
Prime Minister Mark Carney kicked off his government's investment summit in Toronto on Monday and Tuesday, aiming to attract $1 trillion in new investment over the next five years. The event drew protests from Indigenous leaders, environmental groups, and union leaders concerned about public services, pipelines, and arms manufacturing.
The summit brings together 120 Canadian and international funds and investment companies with approximately $120-trillion in combined assets under management. Carney emphasized that capital is just one of many ingredients required to boost Canada's economy, stating 'You need capital, you need deals, you need projects, you need the proper regulatory environment, you need a competitive tax environment, and you need ambition and action.'
On day one of the summit, billion-dollar announcements were made, including an expansion of Bell's AI data centre project in Saskatchewan. The government also changed its tax policy, offering priority access to a program that offers binding decisions from the Canada Revenue Agency for investors putting $1 billion or more into Canada's economy.
The event has been criticized by some for its focus on foreign capital and potential environmental and social impacts.
