Carney's Defiance of Trump Threatens to Destroy Canada's Economy
Canada and the US are locked in a full-fledged trade war, with no end in sight. The latest tariff battle has been the worst yet, with Trump imposing 50% tariffs on Canadian goods including down jackets, wine, agriculture products, and hockey sticks.
The tensions between the two countries have been escalating since Donald Trump's election as US President. In 2018, he engaged in a tariff war over steel and aluminium products with then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Now, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has launched a new strategy: total defiance of Trump. He announced an extensive series of counter tariffs that will commence on September 8, targeting sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, and electronics.
Carney's decision to defy Trump may succeed in the short term due to the recent surge in anti-American sentiment in Canada, but it could potentially crush Canada's economy for future generations. The US is Canada's largest trading partner in goods and services, while Canada is the US' second-largest trading partner.
