Carney's Defiance Risks Crushing Canada's Economy Amid Trade War with US
Canada and the US are embroiled in a bitter trade war, with no end in sight. The conflict began under former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau but escalated further when Donald Trump was elected US President.
The latest tariffs imposed by Trump have been particularly severe, targeting an assortment of Canadian goods including down jackets, wine, agriculture products, and hockey sticks. These items had previously been exempt from tariffs due to their inclusion in the United States-Canada-Mexico Agreement.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has responded to the US's actions with a new strategy: total defiance of Trump. Carney's government announced an extensive series of counter tariffs that will commence on September 8, targeting products covering $27.6 billion in imports from the US.
The PM's remarks have been somewhat forceful, suggesting Washington's terms and conditions would 'destroy' Canada's auto, steel, and aluminium sectors. He demanded the Trump administration stop treating Canada as a 'subsidy' and said that Canada will only return to the negotiating table when America has 'the right attitude towards our industries and in a true partnership.'
