Carney's Investment Push: Canada Seeks $721 Billion in Foreign Deals
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is hosting an investment summit in Toronto, aiming to attract C$1 trillion in investments over five years. The event brings together global investors, including BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and Singapore's Temasek CEO Dilhan Pillay. Carney has pledged to reduce red tape and develop projects in mining, energy, technology, and infrastructure to make Canada an attractive destination.
The summit is crucial for Canada's economy as it navigates a trade war with the US, its top trading partner. The Canadian government hopes to match 100 global investors with local officials, companies, and CEOs to facilitate investments or partnerships. Some of the projects include Xanadu's photonic quantum computer, data centers in development, and the Crawford Nickel Project.
Erik Peterson, managing director at Kearney's Global Business Policy Council, sees Canada as a stable market poised for long-term growth. However, some economists caution that it may be challenging to attract such investments in a mature economy like Canada's.
