Carney's Investment Summit Sparks Criticism from NDP Leader Avi Lewis
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is hosting an investment summit in Toronto to attract $1 trillion in investments for Canadian projects over five years. The event features 100 of the world's biggest global investors, including sovereign wealth funds and U.S.-based investment firms.
However, NDP Leader Avi Lewis has criticized the summit, saying it will make Canada more beholden to wealthy American corporations. He claims that Carney is selling Canadian assets to 'the captains of Wall Street', referring to prominent U.S. investment firms like BlackRock and Blackstone.
Lewis argues that instead of courting foreign investors, Canada should be investing in housing and retrofit programs to address the country's economic challenges. He also points out that the government has put $280 billion in incentives on the table for these foreign investors, which he believes is a 'striking lack of imagination'.
Carney has framed the summit as part of Canada's strategy to diversify its place in the global economy and become less reliant on the United States. However, Lewis argues that this approach will only exacerbate Canada's economic challenges and undermine its sovereignty.
