Cash Still King as Digital Payments Reshape Europe's Payment Landscape
The European Central Bank's (ECB) digital euro project has sparked a debate about the role of cash in modern payments. According to a recent survey, 92% of euro area businesses with physical points of sale still accept cash, making it the most widely accepted payment method.
This figure is surprising given the rapid growth of digital payments. Mobile payment acceptance rose from 36% in 2024 to 68% in 2026, and card acceptance remained stable at 88%. However, businesses continue to see privacy and reliability as major advantages of cash over digital methods.
The ECB's findings have implications for the development of the digital euro. The project aims to offer a digital form of central bank money that retains some characteristics associated with cash. However, consumer preference and security concerns may limit its adoption.
