CBA Dragged Down as Inflation Fears Spark Policy Tightening Speculation
A hotter-than-expected inflation reading has revived speculation that the Reserve Bank of Australia could tighten policy again as soon as next month.
The Australian market attention has shifted toward CBA (ASX:CBA), the largest company on the local bourse and the bellwether for the domestic lending sector, which has found itself on the wrong side of a rotation that has favoured resources names through the closing stretch of the August reporting calendar.
Banking stocks have been the heaviest drag on the benchmark across several recent sessions. A rotation away from lenders reflects a change in macro assumptions rather than any deterioration in underlying businesses. When markets begin to price a higher path for policy rates, names most exposed to domestic credit conditions come under pressure while commodity earners are comparatively insulated.
Net interest margin has become the metric that separates strong performers from laggards across the sector. Deposit competition remains intense as lenders chase stable funding, while discounting across the mortgage market continues to erode spreads earned on new lending.
