CBA Shares Face Biggest Test of the Year with FY26 Earnings Release
Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX: CBA) is set to release its FY26 earnings on August 12th, a key event that may indicate the bank's resilience in the face of increasing interest rates.
The cash rate has risen to 4.35%, and the Reserve Bank of Australia will meet on August 11th, making this year's result particularly relevant. The bank's net interest margin, credit quality, especially across the mortgage book, and final dividend payout are crucial factors that could impact CBA shares.
The half-year results showed a strong performance, with cash net profit after tax rising 6% to a record $5.445 billion. However, margins were the soft spot, coming in at 2.04%, down four basis points. The bank's March quarter update revealed unaudited cash profit of roughly $2.7 billion, which was up 4% year on year but down 1% from the first-half quarterly average.
Income investors will focus on the final dividend payout, with a consensus pointing to a full-year dividend near $5.15 per share for FY26, equivalent to around 4.5% on a grossed-up basis once franking credits are included. However, valuation remains the sticking point for CBA shares.
