CBC Governor Backs ECB on Rates Amid Rising Inflation Risks

Christodoulos Patsalides, governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC), has expressed support for the European Central Bank's (ECB) decision to keep interest rates unchanged. Patsalides stated that inflation risks are increasing due to persistently high energy prices but argued that there is no evidence to justify an immediate rate increase.

Patsalides pointed out that inflation remains broadly in line with expectations, and second-round effects have yet to emerge. He emphasized the need for policymakers to balance incoming evidence with the need to act before inflation becomes entrenched.

The governor warned that geopolitical tensions and elevated oil prices could eventually create inflationary pressures despite limited fiscal space. Patsalides also cautioned that higher government deficits and increased defense spending across Europe could contribute to inflationary pressures.
