Central Banks Gear Up for Pivotal Decisions Amid Rising Global Pressures
Markets are bracing for pivotal decisions from central banks in the US and Japan, as they navigate rising energy prices, escalating conflict in the Middle East, and inflationary pressures.
The Federal Reserve is expected to hike interest rates by a quarter point on Wednesday, with some investors doubting that the central bank will suddenly change course after keeping rates unchanged throughout 2026. New Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has struck a hawkish tone, but has also made clear he won't offer much forward guidance.
Meanwhile, the Bank of Japan is likely to raise interest rates by 25 basis points to 1.25% on September 18, with investors looking beyond that decision to future meetings in October and December. The BOJ's decision is seen as a response to rising inflation and a rebounding yen.
The global economy is also grappling with record-breaking oil prices, which have surged above $100 a barrel for the first time since July. Diesel has hit record highs, jet fuel is nearing April's peaks, and natural gas prices in Europe are at their highest since late 2022.
