Central Banks Hike Rates with Caution Amid Economic Uncertainty
Major central banks in the Group of 10 developed economies are taking a cautious approach to interest rate hikes, driven by concerns over inflation and economic uncertainty. The Reserve Bank of Australia has raised its policy rate to 4.35%, the highest among G10 countries.
The Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged at 3.50-3.75% on Wednesday, citing the need to assess the impact of higher energy prices and AI advances on inflation. This move was seen as a surprise by traders, who had been expecting a rate hike.
The Bank of England also kept its policy rate steady at 3.75%, despite some members of its Monetary Policy Committee voting for a rate increase. The bank's governor, Andrew Bailey, has taken a wait-and-see approach to ensure inflation remains close to the 2% target.
