Central Banks Take Center Stage Amid Rising Interest Rates

The global economy remains in focus as key central banks prepare to make crucial decisions. The European Central Bank (ECB) is expected to raise interest rates by 25 basis points on September 10, with markets already pricing in this move.

However, the bigger issue for policymakers is whether they will stop at one hike or continue to tighten policy further. ECB board member Isabel Schnabel has argued that inflation could remain above target for longer than expected, citing energy prices as a major contributor to rising costs.

In the US, the Federal Reserve (Fed) is closely watching inflation data, with the August jobs report already providing a boost to rate hike prospects. The nonfarm payrolls increased by 162,000, well above expectations, while unemployment remained steady at 4.1%.

Meanwhile, in Japan, the Bank of Japan (BOJ) is expected to raise interest rates for the third time this year, with some policymakers pushing for a faster adjustment in rates. The BOJ has also kept alive the threat of intervention in the currency market, which could put pressure on the yen carry trade.
