Central Banks to Unwind Trillion-Dollar Bond Holdings

The world's top central banks are rethinking their massive bond holdings, which have grown to nearly $20 trillion in value. The balance sheets of the Federal Reserve, Bank of England, European Central Bank, and Bank of Japan now hold a combined total of almost $27 trillion in assets.

This has raised concerns about the impact on central bank independence and trust among taxpayers. Supporters argue that quantitative easing, which involves buying government bonds to stimulate economic growth, has been effective in lowering longer-term borrowing costs and reducing market disruptions.

However, critics point out that this policy has also widened inequality by increasing prices of financial assets held by the wealthy. With Kevin Warsh's appointment as Fed chair, there is a push to unwind these bond holdings and bolster central bank legitimacy.

The BoJ's balance sheet alone is equivalent to more than half its nation's GDP. The Bank of England has been selling securities outright, while the Federal Reserve has allowed some bonds to 'roll off' its balance sheet once they mature.
