Central Banks Weigh Rate Decisions Amidst Growing Uncertainty
The upcoming week will be crucial for markets as several central banks prepare to make key decisions amidst growing uncertainty and pressure from all sides. The Federal Reserve, Bank of Japan, and Bank of England will take center stage, with investors split on whether the Fed will hike rates.
Investors are assigning a two-thirds probability of a 25-basis-point increase in the Fed funds rate, but any decision to delay a hike could further undermine the Fed's independence. The reduced transparency at the Fed has heightened anxiety ahead of the rate decisions, with markets expecting a strong reaction whichever way the vote goes.
The Bank of Japan seems poised to raise rates by 25bps, with investors pricing in about a 75% probability of a hike on Friday and further increases after that until the end of 2027. However, whether this will be enough to prevent the yen from sliding again remains uncertain.
In contrast, the Bank of England appears likely to stand pat, with UK data taking center stage ahead of Thursday's rate decision. The UK's headline inflation rate jumped to 2.9% y/y in July, and further rises are expected due to energy price increases.
