Centuries-Old Factories Still Rolling in the US
America is known for tearing down old structures to make way for new ones. However, there are some exceptional cases where factories have been continuously producing the same products in the same towns for over a century.
The Crane Currency factory in Dalton, Massachusetts has been making paper currency since 1801, with its roots dating back to 1770 when the Crane family supplied currency paper to Paul Revere. Since 1879, they have been manufacturing the specific cotton-and-linen paper used for US dollar bills.
The D.G. Yuengling & Son brewery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania has a similar story. Founded in 1829, it is America's oldest brewery and has been brewing beer on the same hillside since then. The family-owned business managed to survive Prohibition by pivoting to ice cream and 'near beer.'
C.F. Martin & Co., also located in Pennsylvania, has been producing acoustic guitars since 1833. German immigrant Christian Frederick Martin invented the internal 'X-bracing' that gives modern flat-top guitars their signature sound.
