Champagne to Meet US Counterpart Bessent Amid Escalating Trade Tensions

Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne will meet with his US counterpart Scott Bessent at the G20 finance ministers' meeting in North Carolina this week. The meeting is significant as it marks the first face-to-face encounter between high-ranking Canadian and US officials since trade talks broke down ten days ago.

The US has imposed 50% tariffs on $28 billion worth of Canadian goods starting August 22, while Ottawa plans to impose varying tariff levels on US imports starting September 8. US President Donald Trump has threatened steeper tariffs on autos and has taken to social media to criticize Canada, urging Canadian businesses to move south of the border if they don't want to face tariffs.

Bessent confirmed the meeting with Champagne in an appearance on CNBC, saying that while it wouldn't be possible for Canada to engage in a tit-for-tat trade war due to the US economy's larger size. However, he accused Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of turning the issue into a 'political shouting match', claiming that Canada walked away from the negotiation table after being offered the best trade deal on the globe.

Champagne's spokesperson John Fragos stated that the minister will focus on what Canada can offer G20 partners in this turbulent time, including key commodities like critical minerals, energy, and potash. The meeting precedes this year's G20 leaders' summit scheduled for December in Miami.
