China Revamps Ties with Canada Amid US Trade Frictions
China is intensifying its efforts to strengthen economic ties with Canada amid ongoing trade tensions with the US. In a recent meeting, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng met with Andre Desmarais, honorary chairman of the Canada-China Business Council, in Beijing to discuss expanding bilateral economic and trade cooperation.
According to Xinhua News Agency, Vice Premier He mentioned the summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney last January, where both sides agreed to promote a new strategic partnership and provide a new direction for developing bilateral relations.
The momentum towards improved relations between China and Canada appears to be expanding into various fields, including economy and security. The two countries held the 5th defense ministry working-level meeting in Canada on April 4, marking the resumption of defense dialogue after an eight-year hiatus since April 2018.
