China Slams Door on Costly Visas for Japanese Nationals
China has announced a significant hike in visa fees for Japanese nationals. The new rates will be implemented on September 14, and will see single-entry visas increase from 2,250 yen to 16,750 yen (around $109). Double-entry visas will rise from 3,750 yen to 25,100 yen ($163), while multiple-entry visas will cost 33,500 yen for six months and 50,250 yen for one year. The move is seen as a retaliatory measure following Japan's decision in July to raise visa fees for foreign nationals.
The Japanese government increased single-entry visa fees fivefold from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen in July, citing inflation and a weaker yen. China's Global Times reports that the new rates will apply to applications submitted on or after September 14, but those submitted before this date will still be charged at the previous rates.
It is worth noting that visa fees for nationals of third countries remain unchanged. The Chinese Embassy in Tokyo confirmed the fee hike and stated that it would not affect applications already submitted prior to September 14.
