China's Digital Yuan Takes Center Stage in Cross-Border Trade Finance

China's central bank has launched Cross-Border e-CNY Transfer Services (CBETS) to position the digital yuan as a settlement tool for trade, remittances, and other cross-border financial flows. The blockchain-based infrastructure is designed by e-CNY Centre International Company, a Shanghai-based firm managed by the People's Bank of China.

CBETS has already secured agreements with 26 direct participants, including Standard Chartered China and Chinese bank branches in Thailand, Singapore, Laos, and Qatar. This marks a significant expansion of the platform's reach across key Asian and Middle Eastern corridors.

The e-CNY project is now over a decade old, having been established by the central bank in 2014. While it has made progress, with cumulative transaction volume surpassing 16.7 trillion yuan ($2.3 trillion) and over 230 million personal wallets opened, much of its usage comes from policy support or back-end integration rather than consumer adoption.

CBETS offers a different proposition by providing 24/7 services for QR code payments, remittances, trade settlements, and investment financing, with a technical architecture designed for round-the-clock cross-border execution. Overseas participants can connect through a single Hong Kong access point, reducing dependence on layered correspondent banking relationships.

The platform could streamline cross-border trade finance by automating payment release once a shipment is verified or customs data is confirmed. It also responds to the rise of US dollar-linked stablecoins used for fast and low-cost cross-border settlement in emerging markets.
