Chinese Trade Balance Expands Amid High-Tech Export Strength
China's trade balance expanded in August to $119.1 billion from $112.5 billion in July, exceeding market consensus forecasts. The increase was driven by artificial intelligence-related products, which accounted for over half of export growth.
The nation's high-tech exports continued to perform strongly, with integrated circuit sales climbing 130% year-on-year and high-tech sales growing 57%. However, sluggish domestic consumption remains a primary structural weakness in the Chinese economy.
Meanwhile, Australian consumer confidence fell by 5.2% in September due to rising fuel prices and concerns over potential monetary tightening by the Reserve Bank of Australia. Business confidence also declined, with National Australia Bank reporting an 8-point drop in August.
The decline in business confidence reflects widespread corporate apprehension regarding the current economic landscape. The AUD/USD currency pair traded flat following these reports, reflecting broader foreign exchange market uncertainty.
