Circle's Digital Dollar Ambitions Face Fed Rate Cut Headwinds

Circle, the issuer of USDC, has seen its stock price swing wildly since going public. It started at $31 and briefly reached nearly $300 before falling back to around $50.

The company's business model relies on issuing USDC, a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, which allows funds to remain on-chain while avoiding crypto asset price volatility.

Circle earns returns on reserve assets, including cash and short-term US Treasuries, and shares revenue with its distribution partners.

The company's ambitions go beyond just issuing digital dollars, aiming to build a payment network using stablecoins for cross-border settlement and launching a dedicated blockchain for payments, foreign exchange, and asset trading.

However, Circle's core business has been affected by Fed rate cuts and a cooling crypto market. The new round of rate cuts initiated in September 2025 has dragged down Circle's reserve yields.

In Q1 2026, total crypto market capitalization dropped 20.4%, yet total stablecoin supply grew 0.5%, with USDC growing 2.4%. In Q2 2026, total crypto market capitalization fell 12.6% quarter-over-quarter to $2.1 trillion, while total stablecoin supply dropped only 1.6% to $305.1 billion.

USDC shrank 4.8% quarter-over-quarter to $73.5 billion, underperforming the broader stablecoin market; over the same period, USDT remained largely flat, with its market share rising to 60%.
