The deadline coincides with the ongoing takeover drama between Commerzbank and UniCredit, which has reached its final act. While regulators and boardrooms are focused on the acquisition, customers are dealing with the practicalities of the card migration.
Commerzbank CEO Bettina Orlopp met with UniCredit chief Andrea Orcel for their first formal discussions on balance-sheet, legal, and risk-related questions tied to a potential change of control. The European Central Bank may push for regulatory consolidation under UniCredit's umbrella.
The bank has also announced a €1.2 billion share repurchase program, which analysts see as quiet leverage in the ongoing dialogue and a way to adjust the balance sheet before the takeover.
