Commerzbank Posts Record Profits as UniCredit Takeover Talks Intensify
Commerzbank's record-breaking quarterly results have given its management more leverage in negotiations with potential acquirer UniCredit. The bank posted net profit of €898 million, exceeding analyst estimates and setting a new high for operating profit at €1.367 billion.
The second-quarter figures were accompanied by an announcement from CEO Bettina Orlopp that initial talks with UniCredit have begun. However, she emphasized that Commerzbank would not compromise on its governance structure or business model.
UniCredit's regulatory process is ongoing, with the European Central Bank set to review the takeover bid within 60 days. The Italian bank currently holds around 47.6% of capital, but analysts anticipate control measures will follow swiftly if approval is granted.
