Commerzbank Share Price Divided Amid Record Earnings and Ongoing Takeover
Commerzbank's latest quarterly results show record-breaking numbers but create a split among Wall Street analysts. Despite beating expectations, some experts remain cautious about the bank's share price due to the ongoing takeover saga by UniCredit.
The German lender posted its best-ever operating result in the second quarter, with net profit reaching €898 million and operating profit hitting €1.367 billion. Analysts responded with revised target prices, ranging from €38 to €46 per share, but opinions on how much of this performance is already priced in vary widely.
UniCredit's creeping stake in Commerzbank has been a significant factor in the recent momentum. After its takeover offer expired on July 3, UniCredit now holds approximately 44.37 percent of shares and nearly 50 percent of voting rights. The Italian bank's CEO, Andrea Orcel, expressed confidence that control could be secured by the fourth quarter.
Germany's BaFin has deemed UniCredit's application to build its stake beyond 30 percent complete and forwarded it to the European Central Bank for review. Chancellor Merz stated that the government is no longer opposing the takeover but will require UniCredit to maintain Commerzbank's listing, preserve Mittelstand financing, and prevent operational redundancies.
