Commerzbank Shares Recover Amid UniCredit Takeover Drama
Commerzbank's financial results for the first half of 2026 were impressive, with a net profit of €1.8 billion, a 40 percent increase from last year. The bank's operating income rose 14 percent to €2.7 billion, while revenues advanced 7 percent to €6.5 billion. The return on tangible equity hit a record 12.6 percent.
The second quarter contributed significantly to the bank's bottom line, with net earnings of €898 million, more than doubling from last year's €462 million. This exceeded market expectations and sent shares down 1.63 percent to €38.55 on the day of the announcement. However, the stock has since recovered, adding 1.53 percent to reach €39.14.
The bank has unveiled a fresh share repurchase program of up to €1.2 billion, which has been approved by the European Central Bank. Management reaffirmed its full-year guidance: revenues of roughly €13.2 billion, net profit of at least €3.4 billion, and a return on tangible equity of around 12 percent.
The real story, however, is the unfolding takeover drama. UniCredit has formally applied to build a stake exceeding 30 percent in Commerzbank. Germany's financial regulator confirmed the completeness of the application, which has been forwarded to the ECB for review.
