Commerzbank Soars on Record Results Amid UniCredit Takeover Pressure
Commerzbank, Germany's second-largest bank, posted record half-year results despite regulatory pressure from UniCredit, an Italian lender that has been tightening its grip on Commerzbank. The bank's net income surged 40 percent to €1.81 billion, while operating profit climbed 14 percent to €2.7 billion.
CEO Bettina Orlopp signaled a shift in tone by expressing openness to constructive talks with UniCredit for the first time. This change comes as the regulatory machinery grinds forward, with UniCredit's offer period closed on July 3 and the European Central Bank now having 60 working days to rule.
Commerzbank's negotiating position has rarely looked stronger on paper, but investors are cautious about what this means for their shares. The bank pledged to return 100 percent of net income after AT1 coupon payments, roughly €3.2 billion, with at least half earmarked for dividends and an ECB-approved share buyback of up to €1.2 billion.
