Commerzbank Soars to Multi-Year Highs on UniCredit Takeover Hopes
Commerzbank AG's stock has reached multi-year highs in mid-August 2026, trading at €40.02 on August 13, 2026, with a 1.47 percent intraday gain.
This is partly due to takeover hopes following the European Central Bank's inclination to approve UniCredit's planned acquisition of Commerzbank, which would create a group with significant footprints in Germany and Italy and diversified exposure across Central and Eastern Europe.
The bank's record first-half earnings also support the story, with an operating profit of €2.7 billion for the first six months of 2026, a 14 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025, and net income reaching €1.81 billion, a gain of 40 percent versus the prior-year period.
The takeover speculation has narrowed the valuation gap versus other European peers that have already undergone restructuring, with Commerzbank's shares trading near their 52-week high of €40.10 set on August 13, 2026, and well above its 200-day moving average.
