Commerzbank Surges as UniCredit Bid Enters Crucial Review Period
Commerzbank's second-quarter net profit nearly doubled to €898 million, exceeding the €845 million consensus and sparking a market recalibration of its value as both a standalone franchise and potential takeover target.
The bank's record numbers have strengthened its hand in negotiations with UniCredit, which is seeking to push its stake above 30 percent. The European Central Bank has begun a 60-day review period after Germany's BaFin deemed UniCredit's application complete.
Commerzbank CEO Bettina Orlopp has signaled a willingness to engage in 'constructive talks' about a takeover, and Bloomberg reported that she was set to join a video conference with UniCredit representatives. However, the bank's employees are reportedly anxious about what lies ahead, although an agreement with the works council has ruled out compulsory redundancies until 2030.
The financial foundation under these negotiations is strong, with first-half revenue rising 7 percent and net profit climbing 40 percent to a record €1.8 billion. Commerzbank has also announced a new buyback of up to €1.2 billion as part of its planned €3.2 billion capital return for 2026.
