Commerzbank Takeover Deal Hangs by a Thread
The takeover of Commerzbank by UniCredit has reached its most critical phase as the European Central Bank reportedly prepares to wave through the bid.
UniCredit's plan, outlined in an internal document cited by Reuters, targets €1.3 billion in cost reductions at Commerzbank, with the German unit set to operate separately until 2029 or 2030.
The ECB has expressed concerns about the integration process, describing it as 'challenging and long-lasting' and warning of potential cultural clashes between the two institutions.
The regulator is demanding a mitigation strategy and tighter oversight from UniCredit, citing material execution risk in the integration plan.
