Commerzbank Warns of Increased Risk of ECB Rate Hike in September
Commerzbank analysts have increased their assessment of the risk for an interest rate hike by the European Central Bank in September. Rising oil prices and stronger-than-expected Purchasing Managers' Index data are behind this change in view.
Oil prices have been steadily climbing, pushing up energy costs and contributing to broader price pressures. The latest PMI readings also show that the eurozone economy is more resilient than previously assumed, with both manufacturing and services sectors performing above consensus estimates.
The combination of these factors gives the ECB less room to hold rates steady, according to Commerzbank economists. They argue that the probability of another rate increase in September has increased, despite market expectations of a pause after the ECB's July meeting.
While some other major banks, including ING and Deutsche Bank, expect the ECB to pause in September, Commerzbank's view represents a hawkish minority. This highlights the uncertainty surrounding the ECB's next move, with traders and policymakers closely watching oil prices and upcoming data releases for confirmation.
