Commerzbank's €898M Profit Can't Shake Regulatory Uncertainty
Commerzbank, Germany's second-largest listed bank, has just delivered a strong second-quarter net profit of €898 million against analyst expectations of €856 million. The bank also lifted its full-year guidance to at least €3.4 billion and announced a share buyback of up to €1.2 billion.
The regulatory clock is ticking as the European Central Bank (ECB) weighs in on UniCredit's application to build a stake exceeding 30 percent in Commerzbank. BaFin confirmed that the file has been forwarded to the ECB for final assessment, with market observers predicting a formal decision between autumn and early December 2026.
The Italian lender, UniCredit, already holds roughly 47.6 percent of Commerzbank's capital and nearly 49.7 percent of its voting rights. The controlling shareholder in waiting, the question now is under what conditions control will change hands, and with what political fallout.
