Commerzbank's €1.2 billion share buyback program has added complexity to UniCredit's takeover plans, which are currently under review by the European Central Bank.

The Frankfurt-based lender reported a record net profit of €898 million for the second quarter of 2026, nearly double the €462 million posted in the same period last year. Operating income climbed roughly 17 percent to €1.37 billion, with total revenues reaching €3.30 billion.

Despite these strong results, Commerzbank's shares barely moved, trading at around €39.36, just one percent below their 52-week high of €39.85 set just days earlier. Analysts remain divided on the potential impact of a successful takeover, with RBC maintaining its 'Outperform' rating and JPMorgan downgrading the stock to 'Neutral'.
