Commerzbank's Regulatory Overhang Threatens To Dampen Earnings Surge
Commerzbank's stock price has been on an upward trajectory, trading within a whisker of its 52-week peak, but regulators are now at odds over UniCredit's acquisition of the German lender. The Italian bank holds 47.59% of Commerzbank's capital and 49.65% of its voting rights, with a further 11.48% held through non-voting derivatives.
The European Central Bank (ECB) appears to be in favor of the deal, while Germany's BaFin has taken a harder line, accusing UniCredit of aggressive tactics and demanding a strategy that builds trust.
Analysts are divided on the matter, with JPMorgan maintaining a 'Neutral' rating despite raising its price target to EUR 38.00. Meanwhile, DZ Bank and Deutsche Bank Research have expressed optimism, citing Commerzbank's improving performance and strong governance apparatus.
