Cook Pledges to Bring Down Inflation with Potential Rate Hikes
At an Economic Outlook Luncheon in Anchorage, Federal Reserve Board Governor Lisa Cook addressed business leaders about her commitment to bringing down inflation. She emphasized that the nation's inflation rate has been above target for five years, and if left unaddressed, it could become entrenched and harder to deal with.
Cook acknowledged that high inflation has put a burden on households and contributed to negative economic views held by many Americans, including fears about AI taking jobs in the future and low hiring rates. She noted that costs for new houses and rent have soared and outpaced wage growth in most of the country, along with other key areas such as education, healthcare, elder care, and childcare.
Cook stated that she is 'firmly committed' to restoring price stability and ensuring that inflation returns to and stays at target. She also mentioned that the Federal Reserve would be prepared to act by raising interest rates if necessary.
