Cook's Lawyers Blast White House Mortgage Fraud Allegations as 'Baseless'
Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook's lawyers have fired back at the White House over mortgage fraud allegations, calling them baseless and stating that there is no legal basis for her removal. In a sharply worded letter to the White House, attorneys Abbe Lowell and Norman Eisen wrote that Cook never committed mortgage fraud or intentional misconduct.
The controversy centers on properties Cook purchased or refinanced in Michigan and Georgia, with Trump administration officials alleging she declared both as her primary residence to obtain more favorable interest rates. Cook responded that she had marked one of the properties as a vacation home and did not attempt to deceive lenders.
Cook's legal team warned that if Trump uses these allegations as a pretext to remove her again, they will mount a legal challenge. The statement emphasized that the attacks on Cook 'are not about real estate documents, they are about President Trump's attempt to bend the Federal Reserve to his will.'
