Copper Prices Undergo Volatility Amid US Inflation Data and Fed Speech
Copper prices remain volatile as investors weigh key market drivers ahead of US inflation data and Fed Chair's speech. The red metal has been range-bound in recent sessions, with supply concerns and strong exports supporting its long-term bullish outlook.
Mining disruptions in top producers like Chile and positive demand expectations have offered steady support to copper prices. Additionally, the surge in US copper imports has added to the bullish outlook, with July's imports reaching over 200,000 tonnes - the highest monthly import in 12 years.
The increased copper stockpiles in UK and Chinese warehouses have further eased pressure off copper prices, along with the sharp narrowing of LME backwardation. On-warrant copper inventories rose by 63,000 tonnes across Europe, the US, and Asia, indicating that a copper price increase can quickly pull inventories back to exchanges.
The market will likely react to the Fed's Chair speech and performance of the US dollar amid persistent economic uncertainties. The red metal is considered a conventional economic bellwether, moving in tandem with global economic health.
